Introducing PM-Wire™

A transformative magnet technology that could change the face of industries and bring manufacturing back to America

This new permanent magnet technology will revolutionize existing motors, generators and the emerging $80B electric motor propulsion market

MELBOURNE, FL — (September 26, 2018) – AML Superconductivity & Magnetics (AML), the world leader in the development of magnet-based applications, has completed successful development and testing of its permanent magnet manufacturing technology, PM-WireTM (www.pm-wire.com) that is positioned to fundamentally change the way electric motors and generators are designed, manufactured and used across industries worldwide.

Today, despite a global transition from fossil fuel-based transportation to more efficient and clean electric vehicles, aircraft, and vessels for moving people and goods, significant limitations in magnet technology are keeping major producers across industries from realizing their potential in revenue, market, and environmental impact.

The breakthrough approach represented by PM-WireTM increases performance for permanent magnet-based products like electric motors and generators, so they can achieve the highest possible power density and specific torque resulting in the lowest possible weight and highest efficiency at a cost far less than any existing solution.

According to AML CEO Mark Senti, “The impact is enormous! PM-WireTM has the potential to return rare earth mining and permanent magnet manufacturing to the United States, reinventing industries, including automotive, aerospace, energy, medical and maritime. The process dramatically improves the yield and removes the highly laborious process of manufacturing which is the major driver for China’s dominance of the market.”

“We have developed a number of novel, potentially world changing, solutions in the area of magnetics, but this has far exceeded our wildest expectations,” stated Dr. Rainer Meinke, PM-WireTM inventor and Co-Founder of AML.

PM-WireTM allows engineers the flexibility to achieve unprecedented configurations and requirements. In short, engineers will be empowered to design products optimized for their needs rather than be handcuffed to existing magnet sizes, shapes and magnetic field directions.

“We have always seen ourselves as the enabler, the “Magnets Inside,” and with PM-WireTM, we are exactly that – whether it’s a motor or any other permanent magnet-based product,” said Senti.

    Good morning,
You state that: “PM-WireTM has the potential to return rare earth mining and permanent magnet manufacturing to the United States” So am I to assume that this product is based on the use of rare earth? In my experience, the main problem encountered in the production of rare earth magnets is the continuously increasing price of the material. Would this allow for the construction of magnets used in Mass Spectrometry or magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy for a more reasonable price?

Denis: Thank you for the great question.

PM-Wire is a complete unique manufacturing process which utilizes existing permanent magnet (PM) materials. Rare Earth materials are abundant throughout the world. The problem has been the cost to manufacture PMs and assemble products which use them. PM-Wire addresses the cost for production, challenge/cost for assembly and provides an entire new landscape for design and applications.

Regarding your applications I would assume yes. Think about your ideal field, say a Halbach array.. then definitely a “yes”!

So, you are talking about starting with the raw elements and not one of the existing alloys? NdFeB, for example, is not cheap and has kept crawling up in price. Assembling a Halbach array is indeed very challenging, especially if you want to build one with a very homogeneous field for High Resolution Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy. One of the holy grails of the field (no pun intended) is an affordable table top system with the performance of a laboratory size magnet.
